An exciting discovery was recently made in the Grenna Museum archive. A sack of clothes from the Andrée expedition that had not been noticed for a long time was found. Among these clothes is the sweater that S A Andrée used to wrap and protect his first diary. There were also Strindberg’s woolen trousers, which are missing a leg just like his long johns.
The clothes have probably been separated during a storage move where most of the objects from Kvitøya ended up in the museum’s warehouse while some ended up in the archive. These latter belong to a group of clothes that for unknown reasons were not preserved, and possibly ended up where they did because they were considered unclean and too broken.
We are now showing four of the recovered garments in the exhibition at Grenna Museum. They are S A Andrée’s long johns and trousers, as well as Nils Strindberg’s trousers – garments they were wearing at the time of death. There is also the blue sweater that was found next to S A Andrée, in which his large diary was wrapped.
Visit the museum to see these clothes that have never been exhibited before!
